The workshop is free, but please register to guarantee a spot.
Meet at Parking Lot 1 to pick up your free admission ticket to the Montreal Botanical Garden and directions to the First Nations Garden, where the event will take place.
Natasha will go through historical components, including: the structure of a pot, demonstration of building techniques, the utilitarian purpose of pottery, and interpretation of designs. A variety of historical & modern tools will also be provided. Reproduction and original archaeological pottery shards will be available for visual reference. Each participant will build and complete their own small pot.
Natasha Smoke Santiago is a turtle clan woman of the Haudenosaunee or People of the Longhouse, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy. Residing within the Territory of Akwesasne, Natasha has been an Artist for as long as she can remember. She works in many mediums, including Acrylics paint, Clay and an array of various materials. Natasha’s focal point in the Arts has mainly been works with Clay, creating Traditional Mohawk pottery, pipe making and sculpture. Her work is heavily influenced by her Haudenosaunee heritage. Often including the Haudenosauneee history, culture and teachings within her designs.

This workshop reflects BACA’s mission to foreground Indigenous contemporary art and lived knowledge. No prior experience with pottery is required—only curiosity, respect, and a willingness to work with your hands. 👐
