Virginie Michel: Ute kanata (Here in Canada)

Shé:kon Gallery
5826 St-Hubert Street, 2nd floor

Adapted to the reality of First Nations, Virginie Michel’s “Ô Kanata” is both a manifesto calling for the official recognition of a national anthem in an Indigenous language and a song uniting all peoples across Canada.

Virginie Michel is an Innu woman from the Mani-Utenam community who has worked with children for many years. In her free time, she enjoys creating: crafts, songs, nursery rhymes, and more. She is also a woman who actively follows the political developments of her people. Concerned about the future of First Nations languages, she dreams of hearing a national anthem in an Indigenous language and seeing it recognized by Canadian government authorities.

The She:kon Gallery, which means “hello” in Kanien’kéhà, focuses on presenting solo exhibitions by promising Indigenous artists and curators. The Indigenous Contemporary Art Biennial (BACA) thanks its partner, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (Re-Connaître program for Indigenous arts).
