Galerie She:kon 5826, St-Hubert (2e \u00e9tage) Tio\u2019tia:ke (Montr\u00e9al, QC) L\u2019exposition pr\u00e9sente cinq regalia r\u00e9alis\u00e9s par Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Gros-Louis (Wendat). Les motifs, mat\u00e9riaux et accessoires qui composent ces tenues traditionnelles sont de v\u00e9ritables r\u00e9v\u00e9lateurs culturels. Les regalia sont bien plus que des accessoires et des v\u00eatements de danse\u00a0: ils pr\u00e9servent le lien spirituel avec les anc\u00eatres et les traditions. \u00abLe r\u00eave est tr\u00e8s important chez les premi\u00e8res nations, c\u2019est un message qui nous est transmis directement du cr\u00e9ateur. La conception de regalia et de perlage est un processus traditionnel de gu\u00e9rison et de pri\u00e8re qui permet mon \u00e9volution personnelle.\u00bb\u00a0 Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Gros-Louis Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Gros-Louis s\u2019inspire de la nature et de ses r\u00eaves dans ses cr\u00e9ations. L\u2019artiste int\u00e8gre dans ses motifs perl\u00e9s des notions d\u2019histoire et des rappels de l\u2019actualit\u00e9, avec des figures de femmes, des ombres qui \u00e9voquent les s\u0153urs assassin\u00e9es et disparues. Car porter ses regalia, c'est porter le pass\u00e9 et le pr\u00e9sent de son peuple, son statut, son identit\u00e9 personnelle. Chaque \u00e9l\u00e9ment a une valeur symbolique ou rituelle. La robe \u00e0 clochettes est le v\u00eatement traditionnel que les femmes portent pour ex\u00e9cuter la Jingle dance, une danse de gu\u00e9rison. La robe compte 365 clochettes cousues sur la partie inf\u00e9rieure de la robe, qui \u00e9taient anciennement fabriqu\u00e9es \u00e0 partir de couvercles de pots de tabac en m\u00e9tal. Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Gros-Louis est une jeune artiste Wendat qui a grandi \u00e0 Wendake, pr\u00e8s de la ville de Qu\u00e9bec o\u00f9 elle a fr\u00e9quent\u00e9 l\u2019\u00e9cole. C\u2019est \u00e0 la fin de son adolescence qu\u2019elle a reconnu son identit\u00e9 en tant que membre des Premi\u00e8res Nations. Depuis ce temps, elle poursuit son apprentissage dans les traditions Wendats. Elle confectionne des regalia depuis 2015 et elle offre des cours de perlage et de conception de v\u00eatements traditionnels aux membres de sa communaut\u00e9 qui souhaitent s\u2019initier \u00e0 ces savoirs-faire. Jeune m\u00e8re depuis 2018, cela lui a fait prendre conscience de l\u2019importance de la transmission culturelle. En 2021, elle a re\u00e7u la bourse Premi\u00e8re Ovation, de la mesure de soutien \u00e0 la rel\u00e8ve artistique de la Manif d\u2019art de Qu\u00e9bec. Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Gros-Louis est membre de la Chaire-r\u00e9seau de recherche sur la jeunesse du Qu\u00e9bec pour le volet autochtone. She:kon Gallery 5826 St-Hubert (2nd floor) Tio\u2019tia:ke (Montreal, QC) The exhibition features four complete regalia, belonging to the artist Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Gros-Louis (Wendat) and her two children. The patterns, materials and accessories that make up the regalia are real cultural landmarks. The regalia is much more than a dance garment, it preserves the spiritual bond with ancestors and traditions. Making regalia is a spiritual activity. \"The dream is very important to the First Nations; it is a message that comes to us directly from the creator. Designing regalia and beading is a traditional process of healing and prayer that enables my personal growth.\u201d Frederique Gros-Louis In her work, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Gros-Louis is inspired by nature and her dreams to design her regalia. The artist incorporates notions of history and current events in her beaded patterns, with female figures and shadows that evoke the murdered and missing sisters. Wearing your regalia is carrying the past and the present of your people, their status, their gender, their family. Each element of the regalia has a symbolic or ritual value. The Jingle dress, which often makes up the female regalia, is worn to perform the Jingle dance, a healing dance. The dress has 365 jingles sewn onto the lower part of the dress. Those jingles were formerly made from the lids of metal tobacco jars. Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Gros-Louis is a young Wendat artist who grew up in Wendake, near Quebec City where she attended school. It was in her late teens that she recognized her identity as a First Nations person. Since that time, she has continued her apprenticeship in Wendat traditions. She has been making regalia since 2015 and she offers beadwork and regalia design classes to members of her community who want to learn about these skills. As a young mother since 2018, this made her aware of the importance of cultural transmission. In 2021, she received the Premi\u00e8re Ovation grant, a measure to support the next generation of artists from the Manif d'Art de Qu\u00e9bec. Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Gros-Louis is a member of the Quebec Youth Research Network Chair for the Aboriginal component.
